Have you tried some of the U.K. Sites? A quick Google search brought up a few sites that sell Nardi steering wheels and gear shifts, one is bound to have a JDM one or access to get one sourced.

I'm at work for the next two hours so sorry I can't be of more use.

I should try to get one of those to replace the awful wooden Nardi knob in my 94 M.

Supposedly yours weighs only 2.1 ounces, that must make for some interesting feelings when you shift. Hell, even a stock black knob would be an improvement at 7.1 ounces.

I can't stand it, the shape is all wrong, every time I shift quickly into 3rd I mute the radio. and its too light.

Check local junkyards to see if there's a manual Miata sitting in there. Chances are the shift knob might still be there!

I haven't yet but most searches have turned up with Nardi's "Prestige" and "Evolution" knobs which aren't the ones I'm looking for. Supposedly it was a limited dealer-ordered accessory that only Japanese customers had a chance to purchase so it'll be tough finding one outside of Japan for a reasonable price. That said, I'll keep searching periodically for one whenever it shows up.

I'm actually going to make a custom pistol grip shifter out of aluminium for my one of my manufacturing classes next year.

That works too, otherwise I just found a guy in NC who makes custom wooden shift knobs for affordable prices. This one looks like it's the exact same shape as the standard Miata teardrop and in size. He also accepts custom orders if you want to closely match the finish of your Nardi knob.
